A Look At Minecraft’s 1.17 Glow Squid

The glow squid doesn’t generate naturally yet, but it is supposed to spawn in underground lakes.

Minecraft’s 1.17 update, dubbed Caves and Cliffs, is set to launch this summer. Ahead of the launch, though, Mojang has been releasing near-weekly snapshots and beta tests of the update’s new features. One of those snapshots, released at the end of January, showed off the glow squid—the mob that the community voted should be added to the game.

In October, Mojang hosted what it called “Minecraft Live,” which introduced the broad goals of the update to Minecraft. During this event, the community had the opportunity to vote on which of three mobs should be added to the game—the iceologer, the moobloom, or the glow squid.

Of course, we know which of the three was chosen. The glow squid was introduced in snapshot 21W03A for the Java Edition of the game. During that snapshot, we learned that the glow squid is very bright and will drop “glow ink sacs” when killed. These ink sacs will make the text on signs glow brightly, even with colors added. The ink sacs can also be added to item frames to make them glow.

Along with the glow squid, snapshot 21W03A also added glow lichen, which will generate in caves and provide a dim light source. More recently, it was discovered that glow squid and their associated items were causing the Bedrock Edition of the game to crash—even if you haven’t chosen to try the beta.

The glow squid doesn’t generate naturally yet, but it is supposed to spawn in underground lakes. If this is true, they could provide much-needed light to the “Deep Dark” biome that hides unknown treasure—guarded by yet another new mob, the Warden. You’re going to want to make sure that you keep axolotls away from the glow squid, though, because axolotls will attack glow squid on sight.

The Caves and Cliffs update is bringing many new light sources to the game—including the glow squid, candles, glow berries, and glow lichen—however, the one thing that won’t be added is colored light. Technological advances like ray-tracing, though, may mean that we see colored light sources in Minecraft sooner rather than later, though.
